He oversees an extensive research portfolio of basic and applied research to treat, prevent and diagnose established infectious diseases such as respiratory infections, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, diarrheal diseases and malaria as well as emerging diseases such as Ebola and Zika.

Dr. Hauser trained in internal medicine at the New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center, in neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and in immunology at Harvard Medical School and the Institute Pasteur in Paris, France, and was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School before moving to UCSF.
